I used Salomon trail running shoes for the first time when training for, and competing in, the 2007 edition of The Marathon des Sables.  Their XA Pro 3Ds were the ideal shoe for the race.  For desert running I did not need any cushioning, and my main priorities were a stable construction, solid chassis, and a good fit.  The reinforced toe protection was particularly useful, as increasing fatigue caused me to stumble and kick into rocks along the trail.  After the Marathon des Sables I used the same shoe in the Jungle Marathon, and again for all three successful completions (and two podium finishes) in the Yukon Arctic Ultra, 450-mile footrace.  The XA Pro 3D Ultra 2s and the new XA Pro 3D Mountain Trails are the best shoes I have ever worn.  I have used them in every environment on the planet, across deserts, jungles, mountains and Arctic, and they are an excellent, all-terrain trail-running shoe.  I also use them for hiking expeditions, and wore them during my successful completion of the TGO Challenge, a coast-to-coast hike across Scotland.

Photo above taken during the 2009 edition of the Yukon Arctic Ultra, 450-mile race. Here I am wearing my XA Pro 3D Ultra 2 GTX shoes, partially covered with a gaiter.  Beneath I am wearing Injinji and Sealskinz socks.  This combination kept my feet warm even at temperatures below -50 Celsius.

Shortly before the launch of the XA Pro 3D Mountain Trails, I was asked to pop over to the UK Salomon HQ and put together a little film about them.  Apologies for being a little bunged-up on the day, but this was what we came up with:

In addition to the XA Pro 3Ds, I love using the Salomon Speedcross when it gets really muddy, and the Crossmax on hard trails and roads, when I want the extra comfort and cushioning.  I have used the Crossmax during my successful completion of La Ultra: The High, the world's highest altitude ultra.  Aside from the shoes, I use the full range of Salomon clothing and accessories, all of which is excellent for my training and races.  In my opinion, Salomon is the best brand in the world for trail running clothing and attire, and I am privileged to be sponsored by them.

Salomon occasionally holds events to encourage runners to come along and try out a variety of trail shoes in city parks.  The idea is to give potential customers a better idea of what the shoes feel like than they would get from trying them on in a shop.  This is a clip from a City Trail event in 2013, with a brief moment or two with yours truly:

Many thanks to Matt Green and Ellie West at Summit Fever for this photograph, taken at the 2012 edition of La Ultra: The High.  Here I am wearing my Crossmax, together with Salomon shorts, top and Skin Pro hydration rucksack.
